Mallee’s Hidden Treasures Project

December 28th, 2011 by cheryl.torpey

Local student’s have books published about our Mallee

Three new books are to be released throughout the Mallee region to raise awareness of the area’s unique biodiversity and threatened species.

During term three the Mallee Catchment Management Authority sponsored the Enviro-Stories Education Program which saw students from the Mallee region write and illustrate readers for their peers.

The Enviro-Stories Education Program provides a unique community engagement opportunity that involves schools in an environmental education competition with a focus on science, literacy and establishing a “sense of place” within the local environment. The aim of the program was to provide an opportunity that inspires imagination among students while they have fun exploring their local environment.

The theme of “Mallee’s Hidden Treasures” embraced the need for more attention to be placed on preserving our native fauna and flora. Students were asked to learn about biodiversity and threatened species and create readers written about local issues, by local kids, for local kids.

The Mallee CMA and PeeKdesigns wishes to congratulate Tempy Primary School for their wonderful achievements in the Mallee’s Hidden Treasures Enviro-Stories Competition.

The winning entries are:

“Sam and Bandi” by Harrison Jolly, Tempy Primary School

“Spike the Parrot” by Alana Linklater and Rhairnee Mitchell, Tempy Primary School

“The Lost Butterfly” by Peter Hulland and Mia Hulland, Tempy Primary School

The three winning entries have been professionally published and will be printed for distribution throughout the Mallee region.

We hope all participants have enjoyed the competition and that these stories will inspire others to take care of our precious natural resources.

Shave 4 a Cure

March 16th, 2011 by cheryl.torpey

A WOPPING $11,919.50 WAS RAISED!  What an effort from our wee Mallee community.  Well done all!  We were in the top 30 of the fundraisers for this charity.  What an accomplishment for such a small community.

TEMPY PRIMARY SCHOOL CENTENARY

July 12th, 2010 by cheryl.torpey

The Tempy Primary School Centenary was an outstanding success on Saturday with a crowd approaching 400 people who enjoyed the magnificent sunshine, great company and picnic atmosphere.  The giant centenary sign, a gift from Alan Vallance to the community of Tempy, greeted guests as they entered the school.  The excited banter commenced when people started arriving at 9.30am to register, collect name tags and view the vast array of history from Tempy, Speed, View Point, Pirro, Turriff and Turriff West schools.  The old Mallee Trackers dated back forty years, celebrating student work from across the District so the day was a celebration of Mallee education.  There were old desks, writing slates, vinyl records, a 75th Birthday Celebration video made by the students and lots more.  Some of the oldest photographs on display included a 1914 picnic and a few 1920 photos around the Tempy Railway Siding.  Many of the rarer photos were collected by Sally Williams.  Carol Fraser, Kaitlyn Pappin and Cheryl Torpey digitised much of the school’s collection while Sharon Faulkner renovated the collection safely in archive quality albums.  An FRRR Small Communities Grant funded the albums, portable scanner and offset some of the reproduction costs.  Combined talents created the disc that contains hundreds of school and community photographs dating between 1907 to present.  It also contains copies of the ‘Back To Speed’, ‘Back To Tempy’, ‘Where Are The Schools Now?” and Des Burns poetry books.  There are old footy and netball photos and school concert photos from 1996 to 2009.  There are copies of this valuable resource, commemorative mugs and stubby holders available for anyone who might have been unable to attend and who sends their address and payment to the school ($10 for mugs and stubby holders, $15 for the disc and $5 extra for postage).  Robert Faulkner’s talents ensured that the jumping castle, urns and food vans catered for all age groups.  Ice creamed faces were abound and apart from a few disputes over who won the egg and spoon race, everything went well throughout the day.  The official ceremony at 3.30 was hosted by Tania Down (Steering Committee Chairperson) who invited Anne McConnell (ne Robertson who was born two years after the Tempy School commenced), Dianne Woollard (Tempy’s longest serving teacher) and Madison Linklater (youngest student) to cut the birthday cake prepared by Fay Vallance.  The current students sang the national anthem, happy birthday and placed hands full of dirt onto the Claret Ash planted for the children of the future.  Phil Down gathered the most of those present to combine in a group photo.  Whilst not everyone made it to the registration table, the following is a list of past students and teachers in attendance on the day:
