Curriculum

English

The three dimensions of English are Reading and Viewing, Writing and Speaking & Listening. At Tempy Primary School, students complete two hours of explicit Literacy instruction each morning. During this time, they undertake tasks that have been carefully planned by our teachers through analysing student assessment data to meet students at their point of learning need.

Students in the P-2 learning levels receive explicit phonics instruction as part of the Little Learners Love Literacy program whilst students in the grades 3-6 learning levels engage in the SMART Spelling program to reinforce their phonemic awareness. All students across P-6 engage with The Writing Revolution program to enhance their knowledge of sentence structure and apply this knowledge to enhance their own writing.

MATHEMATICS

Our numeracy program provides students with a strong grounding in mathematical skills, strategies and understandings. The aim is to support students in becoming numerate and use mathematics effectively so they can successfully participate at school, at home and in the wider community. Mathematics at Tempy Primary School is tailored to suit small group instruction with ample opportunities for hands-on activities. The Nelson Mathematics program forms the foundation of our numeracy learning, with Mathletics and Maths Mate (middle and upper levels) providing further support and enrichment for our students.

Student Intervention

Students who are in need of additional support with their learning have access to the MiniLit Literacy Intervention program with a trained member of our staff. In-class assistance is also provided to students in both English and Mathematics through the provision of Education Support Staff. Our ES Staff work across both classrooms and are accessible by any student for one-on-one assistance.

SPECIALIST SUBJECTS

It is vital to foster every child’s academic, physical, social and emotional skills in all areas of the curriculum. At Tempy Primary School we offer a range of specialist programs for students in all grades, including Health and Physical Education, Science, Design and Technology, Italian, Art, Library (MARC), Humanities and Respectful Relationships.

LEARNING EXTENSION

A number of our students in the upper learning levels have the opportunity each year to extend their learning through participation in the Victorian High Abilities Program and workshops through Monash University. We are always on the lookout to challenge our students through extending their thinking, so these programs are ever evolving and changing.
